ATRI Launches Survey to Boost Recruitment and Retention of Women Truck Drivers

Seeking Solutions to Enhance Diversity and Inclusion in the Trucking Industry

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has initiated a critical survey designed to examine the strategies employed by motor carriers to recruit and retain women truck drivers. This survey is a pivotal component of a comprehensive study identified by ATRI’s Research Advisory Committee as a top research priority. The primary goal is to understand the unique challenges faced by women truck drivers and to identify best practices that can help overcome these challenges.

Trucking fleets are encouraged to participate in this survey, contributing their insights through an online questionnaire. The survey will focus on documenting the current recruitment communication channels, effective recruitment messaging, and initiatives aimed at fostering a positive company culture. To gain deeper insights into the issue, ATRI will also be conducting virtual interviews with participating carriers. A second survey will be launched later this year to solicit input from women truck drivers on the same topics.

Stormie Janzen, Vice President of Safety and Recruiting at Total Transportation of Mississippi, emphasized the significance of this research, stating, “This research is critical if we’re going to meaningfully increase the number of women truck drivers. I encourage my colleagues across the industry to take some time and respond to ATRI’s request.”

Participating carriers are encouraged to complete the online survey by Friday, November 17, 2023. It is essential to note that all data submitted will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. The survey can be accessed here.

The survey represents a crucial step towards advancing diversity and inclusion within the trucking industry and promoting the valuable contributions of women in this field. The findings are expected to guide the industry in creating a more welcoming and equitable environment for women truck drivers, ultimately bolstering their representation within the sector.
